When Will Disability Checks Be Deposited This Month?
If you are disabled and you receive disability benefits from the Social Security Administration as a result of that disability, you probably depend upon those benefits as an important source of financial support and stability. As a result, it’s understandable that you want to know when those checks will be deposited each month so that you can plan and budget accordingly. Let’s take a closer look at the types of benefits offered by the Social Security Administration and the payment schedule for each type of benefit.
What Types of Benefits Are Available?
The Social Security Administration offers two types of disability benefits for which applicants may be considered, depending upon their circumstances. These include:
- Social Security Disability Insurance: SSDI benefits are benefits that the Social Security Administration provides to approved applicants who are “insured.” This means that they worked a job for a sufficient time and regularly paid employment taxes from their wages into the Social Security system.
- Supplemental Security Income: Unlike the case with SSDI benefits, those who seek SSI benefits need not be “insured.” This is because SSI is funded not by employment taxes but by general revenue instead. While they do not need to be insured, those who receive SSI benefits must have income and resources below a specific annual limit established by the Social Security Administration.
Regardless of which type of benefit you seek, you must be able to satisfy two important criteria. First, you must have a medical condition that the Social Security Administration recognizes as a disability. Secondly, that condition must have rendered you unable to work for one continuous calendar year or more.
These benefits share some similarities, but they have significant differences, too. The type of benefit you want to seek will depend upon your unique situation, and consulting with an attorney regarding your particular circumstances is always advised. It’s also helpful to understand that the type of benefit you receive will determine your payment schedule if approved.
Benefit-Specific Payment Schedules
Before 1997, Social Security benefits were always paid on the third day of each month. This was the case regardless of whether a recipient received retirement or SSDI benefits. Today, however, the schedule is different. Those approved for benefits after 1997 will receive payments based on their birthdate.
Under the current SSDI payment schedule, if your birthday falls on:
- The 1st through 10th of the month: Your benefit payment will arrive on the second Wednesday of the month.
- The 11th through 20th of the month: Your benefit payment will arrive on the third Wednesday of the month.
- The 21st through 31st of the month: Your benefit payment will arrive on the fourth Wednesday of the month.
One benefit of the SSDI payment schedule is that because payments are made on a Wednesday, they are generally not interrupted by holidays or weekends. This is not necessarily the case for SSI benefits, however.
Unlike SSDI benefits, which are paid based on birthdate, SSI benefits are paid on the first day of the month. In these cases, sometimes the first of the month does fall on a weekend or a holiday. If that happens, payment will typically be made on the last regular business day before the scheduled payment date.
How Are Payments Deposited?
In addition to wanting to know when they will be paid, those seeking disability benefits often also want to know how they will be paid. That’s an important question to ask.
For the majority of beneficiaries today, payments are made via direct deposit. That deposit can be made directly into a bank account with information provided by the recipient, or payments can be deposited onto a Direct Express debit card for use by the beneficiary.
While SSI payments used to also be made through a check in the mail, it is important to know that payments by check will no longer be an option after September 30, 2025. For those still receiving checks by mail, it will be essential to contact the Social Security Administration to opt for either direct deposit into a bank account or onto a Direct Express debit card.
