Each state runs its own DDS office, which evaluates the medical evidence in your initial application and reconsideration. Approval rates and processing times vary significantly by state.

OHO Hearing Offices and ALJ Approval Rates
The Office of Hearings Operations handles ALJ hearings regionally. Wait times and ALJ approval rates differ by office, and a local representative knows which judges handle which case types.

State SSI Supplements
Some states pay an additional SSI supplement on top of the federal benefit. Others do not. Knowing which is which affects what the claimant actually receives each month.

Medicaid and Medicare Interactions
SSI recipients qualify for Medicaid, which is state-administered, so the scope and speed of enrollment varies. SSDI recipients become eligible for Medicare after a 24-month waiting period.
